LOS ANGELES, February 27, 2010 – Christian Berger, AAC, Alar Kivilo, ASC, CSC, Eagle Egilsson said top honors in the three competitive categories at the 24th Annual American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Outstanding Achievement Celebration Awards here tonight at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel
Kivilo was the beneficiary of the film / television miniseries award Taking ChanceEgilsson won awards in the category of episodic dark blue (“King of Venice”). Berger won the feature film The White Ribbon.
“The movies are incredible,” he said. “You go into a dark room and are moved by a story full of made or built on fantasy and everything in between. You can fall in love with the characters or the story can break your heart.Actor Timothy Dalton embraced some poetic ideas about the wide range of films that were nominated for top honors in the feature film category, while presenting the award to Berger.
The other nominees in the category of film is Barry Ackroyd, BSC for The Hurt Locker, Dion Beebe, ASC, ACS of Nine, Mauro Fiore, ASC Avatar and Robert Richardson, ASC for Inglourious Basterds
“The stories range from undercover police officers in Los Angeles to forensic specialists in Las Vegas, a New Yorker struggling to be fashionable for a wannabe super hero,” he said. “The common denominator is that art photography helped transport the audience into their world.Amanda Righetti, who plays a role in The Mentalist, also referred to the diversity of the films nominated for the cinematography award in the category of television series during its presentation to Egilsson.
The other nominees in episodic TV Series / Pilot category Jeffrey Jur, ASC Flash Forward (“The Gift”), Michael Price for Ugly Betty (“No place like mode), Christian Sebaldt, ASC CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (“Family Affair”) and Glen Winter, CSC for Smallville (“Salvador”)
In presenting the TV movie / miniseries Kivilo Award, actor Ryan O’Neal said: “The nominees this year have increased over the bar raised, the development of powerful images for stories deep reward viewers to see.
Kivilo were nominated along with Rene Ohashi, ASC, CSC for Jesse Stone: Thin Ice and Jerzy Zielinski, ASC for the fearless heart of Irena Sendler
Stern was behind the camera when Freeman won an Oscar � for her performance in Million Dollar Baby and last year during the production of Invictus. Tom Stern, ASC Award presented by the Board of Governors to Morgan Freeman in recognition of the actor’s body of work and contributions to the art of cinema. Freeman earned his sixth Oscar nomination this year for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela
The three honorees made clear that his best work lies aheadThe Lifetime Achievement Award in Television was presented to John C. Flinn III, ASC and Michael O’Shea, ASC. ASC International Award was presented to Chris Menges, ASC, BSC by actor Tim Roth. The presentation of the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award to Caleb Deschanel, ASC for their daughters Emily and Zooey Deschanel was a highlight of the evening memorable.
ASC Presidents Award was given to Sol Negrin, ASC by his son Michael Negrin, ASC, in recognition of his achievements as director of photography, and its ongoing commitment to preparing the next generation for the future
ASC also recognized the new generation of filmmakers with the presentation of the ASC Heritage Award Richard Moore Student graduate student Benji Bakshi American Film Institute, and Shannon Garrett undergraduate at Loyola Marymount University
